What is Antisocial Personality Disorder?

One of which is called anti-social personality disorder. The name suggests a disorder in which someone avoid socialization, but this is not what this personality disorder entails.

Instead, someone with an antisocial personality disorder disregards the norms and morals within the social contract of society. People with antisocial personality disorders are like schoolyard bullies, but prolonged through time, they disregard the feelings of others and readily form aggression and blame toward others, their actions and breaking rules and even laws are without guilt or remorse.

This person would willingly exploit others or throw others under the bus and never lose sleep over it. Antisocial personality disorder and psychopathic traits overlap quite extensively. Is someone born and destined to develop this disorder or is it induced by childhood environment? Twin studies suggest there is some genetic underpinnings and there are even genes and neurotransmitter pathways linked to this disorder.

There are also hormone relationships, including higher levels of testosterone. Finally, head trauma is also linked in that reduced gray matter or activity in certain regions of the brain are observed more in antisocial individuals. These associations do not guarantee or even predict if someone will develop this disorder, but the associations suggest some aspects of antisocial personality disorder are biologically determined.

Other roots of this disorder, maybe in childhood development specifically, it is hypothesized that lack of interaction to very young children can alter neurological development, abuse, and neglect can also increase the risk for antisocial personality disorder. Finally, prevalence seems to be higher in men than women, which could be a mix of both genetic and environmental factors.

It is unsurprising to know individuals with antisocial personality disorder have difficulty following the laws and norms of society. Individuals often end up with substance abuse problems, homelessness, poor relationships and criminal records. Is there treatment or hope for individuals with this personality disorder?

The consensus is that full change is not possible, but some aspects can be reduced with therapy. Medication has not proved successful across the board, but could be used to treat comorbidities that are making the personality disorder worse. In conclusion, antisocial personality disorder defines those who willingly and unabashedly harm.

Other humans. There is limited treatment for those individuals. As of right now, instead policy has focused on punishment, but someone truly with antisocial personality disorder will not feel remorse for their actions.
